Grief is not solely triggered by the death of a loved one, but by any of the 44 different losses that people may experience in their lifetime. Unchecked, grief can obstruct one’s path to a joyful, meaningful existence.
After experiencing the loss of my 9-year-old son, I finally had a profound understanding of the lingering despair and recovery barriers people who dealt with a significant loss had been burdened with that my 23+ years’ experience as a physician could never have taught me. My grief journey revealed that we lack the necessary tools and strategies to navigate significant losses, resulting in a tether to our grief and a hindrance to purposeful living.
About Kimberly Smith Dauterive, M.D.
Dr. Kimberly Smith Dauterive is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician. She was born in Washington D.C. but grew up in St. Martinville, LA. She was raised as an only child by her phenomenal mother, Lorraine Savoy, in a single parent household where she learned how to be strong despite the obstacles, courageously independent, and how to boldly live life with purpose.
Dr. Kim graduated as salutatorian of her class in 1989 from St. Martinville Senior High School in St. Martinville, LA then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1993 from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA; her Master of Science Degree in 1996 from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, LA (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette); and her Doctor of Medicine Degree in 2000 from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA.
